The Daniel Fast Pillar

The Daniel Fast — 21 days, the biblical way.

Based on Daniel 1 and Daniel 10. The complete guide — food list, meal plan, prayer rhythm, verse plan, and how to actually finish the 21 days without losing the point.

The Daniel Fast is the most sustainable long-form fast in the Bible — 21 days of whole plant foods and water, paired with focused prayer. Daniel used it to seek understanding; the modern church uses it to open the year, seek direction, or press in before a major decision.

What is the Daniel Fast?

A 21-day partial fast built from two passages: Daniel 1:8–16 (Daniel refuses the king's rich food, eats vegetables and water for 10 days, and looks healthier) and Daniel 10:2–3 (three full weeks of "no pleasant food, no meat, no wine" tied to intense prayer and a heavenly encounter). The modern version combines both.

21-day Daniel Fast prayer plan

Anchor each week to one theme. Use hunger as a prayer trigger — every craving is a cue to pray.

  • Week 1 — Surrender. Not my will. Psalm 51, Romans 12.
  • Week 2 — Clarity. Direction for the next 12 months. Proverbs 3, James 1.
  • Week 3 — Breakthrough. Intercede for the people and situations you named on day 1. Daniel 10, Ephesians 6.

How to start the Daniel Fast

  1. Prep week. Taper caffeine, sugar, and meat for 5–7 days before day 1.
  2. Set the prayer focus. Write it down before you start.
  3. Meal-prep Sundays. Cook a big pot of lentils and rice; wash a week's produce; the fast dies at the grocery store on day 6.
  4. Tell one person. Not the whole feed (Matthew 6:18).
  5. Plan the break. Days 22–25 reintroduce foods slowly.

Frequently asked about the Daniel Fast

What is the Daniel Fast?

The Daniel Fast is a 21-day partial fast based on Daniel 1 and Daniel 10. You eat only whole plant foods — fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds — and drink only water. No meat, dairy, sweeteners, leavened bread, alcohol, or processed food. The goal is spiritual sensitivity, not weight loss.

How long is the Daniel Fast?

The classic Daniel Fast is 21 days, based on Daniel 10:2–3 ('I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine entered my mouth… for three full weeks'). Some Christians run a 10-day version (based on Daniel 1:12) or extend to 40 days. Start with 21.

What can you eat on the Daniel Fast?

Fruits (fresh, frozen, dried, no added sugar), vegetables, whole grains (brown rice, oats, quinoa), legumes (beans, lentils, chickpeas), nuts and seeds, plant oils (olive, coconut), herbs and spices, and water. That's it.

What can't you eat on the Daniel Fast?

No meat, poultry, fish, or dairy. No eggs. No sweeteners of any kind (including honey and maple syrup). No leavened bread. No refined or processed food. No deep-fried food. No caffeine or alcohol. No solid fats.

Can you drink coffee on the Daniel Fast?

No. The strict Daniel Fast is water only. Some modern versions allow herbal tea; most exclude coffee, black tea, and any caffeinated drink. If you're a heavy coffee drinker, taper down for a week before starting to avoid headaches.

Is the Daniel Fast biblical?

Yes. Daniel 1:8–16 describes Daniel and his three friends refusing the king's rich food and eating only vegetables and water — and looking healthier than everyone else after ten days. Daniel 10:2–3 describes a longer three-week partial fast tied to intense prayer and a spiritual encounter. The modern Daniel Fast combines both patterns.

How do you break a Daniel Fast?

Reintroduce foods slowly over 3–5 days. Start with more cooked vegetables and small amounts of dairy or eggs. Add fish, then chicken, then red meat. Don't celebrate day 22 with a pizza — the digestive system needs to re-acclimate, and the spiritual momentum deserves better than a crash landing.
